Ring Weekend

"Darla it was a magnificent sight! We were all in India whites wearing red sashes, whew! What a beautiful occasion….After the reception we went into the Mess Hall to prepare for seating. But before I went in I had to check my mail! And much to my surprise was a letter from my Date!! You! So I was walking around reading your letter while all these officers, cadets & dates are engaging in small talk. So when everyone asked me where my date was I showed them the letter. Capt. Guthrie took a picture of me & your letter on Washington Statue."

"I’m sorry that I could not call you this morning however I’m sure you know what has happened! We were asleep when it all went down. Someone came bustin’ in our room and yelled at us to get in our MOPP gear (Gas Attack Uniform) and to take our nerve agent pills. The rest of the early morning was chaotic with all kinds of rumors flying around. Anyways now we are out by the port with our vehicles awaiting transport to our assembly area out in the desert somewhere."

A year or so after Joe had passed, Daria came to my house and said she had something to show me, "but don't cry." They found a roll of film in a desk drawer and when they developed it, a precious group of pictures were found! I cried.
